About Life Coaching

You may come for life coaching with a particular issue already identified. However, we can incorporate other aspects of your life (if you wish), to give a more holistic approach to necessary changes. This may include:

  • personal relationships and how you interact with others
  • your health and body image (including weight loss, stopping smoking, starting exercise, changing your wardrobe)
  • your career (career choices, managing change, job satisfaction)
  • your income and money management
  • time management
  • confidence and assertiveness skills.

I don't provide specialist advice in these areas, but together we identify the changes that you need to make and source specific help if need be. With that knowledge, you can decide to take action. We all avoid things that make us feel uncomfortable but as your life coach,I will help you look at your fears and face them. Some clients sense they are searching for a particular 'thing' in their life, and often they discover that what they were searching for was right in front of them - it was so close, they just couldn't see it!

Clutter Clearing - in the past few years, clients have increasingly asked me to work within their home environment to do an indepth investigation towards clutter clearing. There is MUCH more to this than a good tidy up! If you have significant excess physical clutter in your home, you will undoubtedly have emotional issues attached to that clutter. ALL clients who have undertaken clutter clearing work have made tremendous leaps forward! This is probably the most fascinating - and most tiring- area of my coaching work. Many clients start off feeling very resistant (for all sorts of reasons which we work on) and suddenly get a surge of energy to clear their homes. Clutter clearing must be done with great sensitivity and requires careful psychological exploration before the practical work starts. It is a wonderful way to get your life moving.

    Habits, Beliefs and Homework

Coaching involves letting go of old habits and beliefs (psychological clutter),that were once useful, but no longer apply to your life. Coaching always involves identifying your values and goals in life and taking action based on that knowledge. I will ask you to 'do your homework' after each session - this is the 'action' bit of coaching. This could be making a phone call, trying something new for the first time, writing a diary. Knowing you will report back to your coach, helps to get you motivated. If you don't do your 'homework' we can look at why not. This may be fear of failure, lack of motivation, lack of time...why you do not take action often reveals more about you than you think! I believe there are no true mistakes, but plenty of learning and experiments to try. Perhaps the only true mistake is to do nothing about something that matters to you.

    Coaching is different from Counselling

Counsellors and coaches may have similar qualities and skills but they apply them with different outcomes in mind. Although we look at past habits, beliefs etc, coaching is always future focused, with practical goals to aim for. Coaching takes a lot of physical and emotional energy in order to move forward. Therefore individuals who are experiencing significant psychological difficulties in their lives are unlikely to get the optimum benefits out of coaching. Counselling is a more appropriate route to follow - at least until emotional issues are explored and resolved.

What Sort of Clients Do I Work With?

All sorts! Men, women, teenagers, single, married, divorced, 20s, 30s, 40s and upwards. Recent achievements and changes for my clients have included: three long term relationships, a divorce, several career changes, a couple of promotions, starting a business, three house moves, one emigration, getting a dog, returning to university, taking up horse riding, several job resignations and PLENTY of self understanding and new found contentment. But life coaching, like life, is a process and is on-going. We can't do it all in a few sessions, but can definitely give change a kick start if you are ready!
